MWSS PROJECTS
The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), created under Republic Act No. 6234, has jurisdiction, supervision and control over all waterworks and sewerage systems in the territory within Metro Manila and some cities/towns in nearby provinces of Cavite and Rizal, for a total service area of 1,940 square kilometers, also to include the province of Bulacan. However, pursuant to Republic Act No. 8041 otherwise known as the “National Water Crisis Act of 1995”, as implemented by Executive Order No. 286 dated December 06, 1995 and Executive Order No. 311 dated March 20, 1996, MWSS entered into an arrangement that resulted in the involvement or participation of the private sector in any or all of the segments, operations and/or facilities of the MWSS. Thus, the operation of the system of waterworks and sewerage services was privatized in August 01, 1997 under a Concession Agreement subdivided into east and west service areas. The east service area was awarded to Manila Water Company Inc. (MWCI) and the west service area was awarded to Maynilad Water Services Inc. (MWSI).
The present source of water supply is the Angat Dam which is a multi-purpose facility, serving (1) water supply for Metro Manila and suburbs, (2) power generation for the NPC, and (3) irrigation systems for NIA. As a water supply source, Angat provides nearly 97% of Metro Manila’s water supply today. In order to supplement the water supply available from the Dam, the Umiray-Angat Transbasin Project (UATP) was then constructed, thus increasing the total water supply capacity to 4,000 million liters per day, broken down as follows:

At present, the existing water supply of 4,000 MLD is no longer sufficient to meet the present water demand for Metro Manila estimated at 5,130 MLD, thus the need to find other sources of water.
In this regard, MWSS has formulated a Development Plan for Future Water Supply Sources for Metro Manila that comprises of the Interim and Long Term Water Source Projects.
